Lincoln Stars News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars (2-0-0) pushed back with a four-unanswered effort in the second and third periods to push ahead for a 4-2 win over the Des Moines Buccaneers (1-2-0) on Friday night at the Ice Box.
After an early Stars press, the Buccaneers took the reigns with a bit of luck in the opening period. At 6:10, Buccaneers forward Sam Hentges got some help from a Lincoln stick coming off his back-handed cross that popped by the net-minder to give the Buccaneers the early 1-0 lead. Des Moines found their second on their first power play at 10:04 when a rebound off two different posts was placed in by forward Mike Hartman to double the lead, 2-0.
The Stars came back in the second period and took control of the game from the outset of the frame with two swift goals. A 2-on-1 rush led by forward Austen Long was completed with a one-time tip by forward Ashton Calder at 1:13 to cut the lead in half, 2-1. Just two minutes and nine seconds later at 3:22, Stars forward Paul Cotter waited patiently for the net-minder to make the first move and slotted the puck into the open net to tie the game, 2-2. The Stars weren't finished, and at 9:29 Austen Long re-directed a shot from the right point that found the back of the net to take the lead, 3-2. The Stars outshout the Buccaneers 16-6 in the second period.
In the third period, the Stars went into lock down mode and stifled the Buccaneers throughout the frame while adding a bit of late game pressure. For their efforts, they earned one more insurance goal when forward Gustaf Westlund carried in the empty net goal at 19:51 to seal the 4-2 win.
Stars goaltender (2-0-0) earned the win, stopping 20 of 22 shots, while Buccaneers net-minder Ryan Snowden (0-2-0) picked up the loss in a 38-save effort on 41 shots. The Stars continue their home-and-home series against the Buccaneers on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7:05 p.m. from Buccaneer Arena in Des Moines. Coverage begins just before face off on HockeyTV and Lincoln Stars Radio.
