Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
WATERLOO, Iowa - Cole Guttman's first goal of the season, and 26 saves from Jaxon Castor were just what the Dubuque Fighting Saints needed. A power play goal just two and a half minutes into the third period set up a thrilling finish as the Saints defeated the Waterloo Black Hawks 1-0 on Saturday night at Young Arena.
The Fighting Saints were awarded a power play, their only man advantage of the game, early in the third period. Alex Steeves fed Jonatan Asplund at the point, and spotted Guttman, who faded away to the left circle. The one-timer evaded Black Hawks goaltender Jared Moe for his first goal allowed in the USHL, and gave the Saints the lead.
Not to be outdone, Jaxon Castor notched his first shutout of the season, and the sixth of his career. He stopped all 26 shots fired his way, matching the effort Moe put forth the night before. He held the fort in a 6-on-5 opportunity late in the game and the defense held on for the rest of the way en route to the Saints' first win of the season.
Moe denied 22 of 23 shots fired his way.
The turning point of the game came in the second period, as, after Castor made a save on a breakaway, Roman Kinal was flagged down for a five minute cross checking penalty. The Saints held on to kill off all five minutes. It was the only power play opportunity that the Black Hawks received.
Waterloo rode that power play to create a 13-5 shot discrepancy in the second period. The Saints still held on to outshoot Waterloo 26-23 for the game.
The win was head coach Oliver David's first in his tenure with the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
The Saints are back in action on the road next Friday, October 21 against the Chicago Steel at the Fox Valley Ice Arena. Catch the action on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM, or on the USHL's streaming video provider, HockeyTV.
