Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current and Red Deer squared off for their third meeting of the season at the Enmax Centrium on Saturday night and it was a hard road outing for the Broncos as they lost by a score of 6-2.
The Rebels scored two goals 53 seconds apart halfway through the first period on similar plays. Rebels forwards Josh Tarzwell and Brandon Hagel were both set up all alone in the slot area and ripped high wrist shots by the glove hand of Broncos goalie Joel Hofer, putting Red Deer up 2-0.
While the Broncos were fore-checking in Rebels territory late in the frame, Joona Kiviniemi was tripped by the Rebels' Alex Morozoff which resulted in a Broncos power play. Swift Current made use of their man advantage as Yorkton, SK product Alec Zawatsky received a beautiful long cross ice pass from Ben King and patiently lazered one over the shoulder of Rebels goaltender Ethan Anders.
Swift Current played well in that first period as they landed 12 shots on goal to the Rebels seven and trailed by a 2-1 score going to the second period.
Cameron Hausinger made it 3-1 Red Deer with five minutes gone in the second and shortly after, the Broncos' Ian Briscoe was an inch away from gathering his first goal as a Bronco when his shot from in close made some bounces and landed on the Rebels goal line before being covered up. The play went to video review and unluckily, it was ruled no goal for Swift Current.
The Rebels grew the Broncos deficit to 4-1 as Hausinger located the puck in a scramble in the Broncos crease and banged it home.
With the Rebels ahead 5-1 in the third, the Broncos would light the lamp again as rookie Matthew Culling netted his second goal of the season. King recorded his second assist of the night for his third career multi-point outing.
Swift Current went on to fall by a 6-2 margin with the shots on goal being 40-23 in favour of Red Deer. Both clubs went 1/3 on the power play.
The Broncos return home for the first of two consecutive home games with the first marked down for Wednesday, December 12th vs. the Regina Pats. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm CT.
