Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, Wash. - Max Patterson buried a breakaway goal after one of Dustin Wolf's 43 saves to break a tied game in the third period and help lift the Everett Silvertips to a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds before a sellout crowd of 6,126 at accesso ShoWare Center on Saturday in WHL action.
The Tips improved to 3-0-0-0 in the season series and won their sixth straight over Seattle, dating to the first round of last season's WHL Playoffs. Sean Richards hit double digits in goals while Wolf turned away all 16 shots he saw in the third period, marking the 20th game in his career of allowing a goal or less.
UP NEXT: The Silvertips return home on Sunday and host the Spokane Chiefs at 4:05 p.m. (KRKO / Tips App / WHL Live) in downtown Everett. Tickets are on sale at www.everettsilvertips.com/tickets.
In a scoreless first period, Everett pushed through a with a solid opening 20 minute effort in the Seattle zone. Sean Richards tallied the first goal of the night at 16:25 after a scramble at the net to close out the period. This goal, assisted by Fairbrother and Khaira, pushed Richards into the double digits for his scoring this season.
Seattle's Nolan Volcan lit the lamp only 3:59 into the second with a shot over the glove of Dustin Wolf, through a heavy screen to close the scoring gap. However, regardless of letting in a goal at the start of the period, Wolf owned the period with exceptional control in dealing with rebounds, heavy traffic, and a consistent pounding from an excited Thunderbirds bench. He made 17 saves in the period.
The third period was undoubtedly highlighted by an incredible breakaway goal by Max Patterson, his eighth of the season. Everett marched in with strength in spite of the return of Seattle's Jarret Tyszka, who served a ten minute misconduct for a retaliation hit while Sean Richards (lost for the game after a boarding major). At 7:46, moments after a highlight reel-worthy save by Wolf on Andrej Kukuca's one-timer, Patterson broke away and found the net for an unassisted goal.
With limited scoring opportunities on both sides of play, Everett retained steady pressure and consistent play down at the Seattle end for the remainder of the third period to close out a tense, high-shot and low-score game with their third victory (out of three games) over Seattle so far this season.
