Reading Royals News Release
TOP TEN NOTES OF THE WEEK
1. The Royals dropped the team's home opener on Saturday night to the Johnstown Chiefs, 6-4. This marked the start of the eighth season of Royals' hockey in Reading; and the team has compiled an overall record of 3-3-2 in openers at the Sovereign Center. The Royals also suffered a loss in the second home game of the season on Sun- day (3-2 to the Augusta Lynx). The longest winless streak at home to start a season for Reading was sustained in the inaugural year (2001-02), when the Royals began the season 0-2-1 before registering the first home win in team history, 3-1 over the Charlotte Checkers on October 21, 2001.
2. In Saturday's loss, the Royals found themselves trailing the Chiefs 2-1 after the first period. Reading was behind the Augusta Lynx by the same score in Sunday's loss. So far this season, the Royals have been outscored in the first period by a total of 7-3. Reading has been outscored in the second period, 5-1. The team's best period so far this year has been the third, in which the Royals have outscored the opposition, 8-4.
3. For the first time this year, the Royals scored the game's first goal in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Augusta. Coming into this season, the Royals had scored the game's first goal in 244 of the 504 games played by the team, i.e. 48.4% of the time. In those games, Reading had compiled a record of 172-48-24, which translates into a .754 win percentage. Last season, the Royals went 25-5-3 when scoring first, which is an .803 win percentage..
4. After scoring first in Sunday's game, the Royals held the lead (at 1-0) for 5:27, i.e. until Augusta tied the game at one at the 13:13 mark of the first period of play. So far this season, the Royals have played with the lead for 16:56 of the 240 total minutes of game time. The Royals have trailed the opposition for 166:51 during the first four games of the season.
5. Tyler Doig scored the Royals first power play goal of the season (to tie the game at one) in Saturday's loss to Johnstown at the twenty-four second mark of the sec- ond period. Doig also registered a pair of assists in Saturday's game, making him the first Royals to bag three points in a single game this season. Doig also engaged in a sollid tilt on Saturday to cap off the 'Gordie Howe Hattrick'. Doig assisted on both of the Royals' goals on Sunday to pick up his second consecutive multi-point perform- ance for the team.
6. Shawn Snider extended his personal point streak to all four games he's played for Reading this year by assisting on a pair of goals in Saturday's loss (his first multi- point game for the Royals) and by bagging his second goal of the year for the team 7:48 into Sunday's game. Snider is currently tied with Tyler Doig for the team scoring lead with five points (2g - 3a).
7. Brock Hooton picked up an assist in each of the two games played by the Royals this past weekend. Hooton is currently riding a three game point streak (1-2a=3pts). Hooton, who led the Royals in goals and points last season, had the second longest point streak of the year for Reading during the 2007-08 season, going nine consecu- tive regular season games with at least one point (5g-8a=13pts) (12/14/07-01/.05/08). Hooton also had an eight game point streak in the playoffs for Reading last year (4g-4a=8pts) (04/19 - 05/03/08). The Royals longest point streak last season belonged to Shawn Collymore, who went 18 consecutive games (regular season and play- offs) with at least one point (9g-18a=27pts) (02/22 - 05/03/08).
8. Goaltender Danny Taylor stopped a season high 36 shots (of the 39 taken-also a season high against) in the 3-2 loss to the Augusta Lynx on Sunday. In the two games that Taylor has played for the Royals, he has stopped 69 of the 76 shots he has faced, which translates into a team leading .914 save percentage. Taylor's 3.03 goals against average also currently leads the team.
9. On average, the Royals are currently the third most penalized team in the league, racking up an average of 30.75 penalty minutes against per game. Reading has been assessed with 39 minor penalties-which have translated into 33 power play chances for the opposition this season. (The Royals have also registered five fighting majors and two games misconducts). The PK has allowed 6 PPGA in 33 chances for the opposition, which is an 81.8% kill ratio (which is 13th in the league).
10. The Royals scored a pair of power play goals (in 9 chances with the man advantage) in Saturday night's 6-4 loss to Johnstown. Reading's PP has gone 3 for 21 with the man advantage so far this season-which is a 14.3% scoring ratio (15th in the league).
CLOSING NOTES
1 Mac Faulkner registered a team-high 8 shots on goal in Sunday's game against Augusta. Faulkner currently leads the Royals with 19 shots through four games.
2. Kirk MacDonald scored a goal in his debut performance for the Royals in Sat- urday's loss to Johnstown. MacDonald's third period goal against the Chiefs kick- started the comeback effort for the Royals. That goal was followed by the first goal for Steve Ward as a member of the Royals, and the second goal of the sea- son for Jeff Corey to draw the Royals within one of Johnstown (5-4) with just 33.8 seconds left in the game.
3. Dinos Stamoulis scored his first goal as a member of the Royals with just 4:33 remaining in the third period on Sunday to make it a one-goal game against the Lynx. That marked Stamoulis' first ECHL goal since March 24, 2007, when he scored the game's first goal as a member of the Toledo Storm against the Read- ing Royals at the Toledo Sports Arena. The Storm ended up defeating the Royals in that game, 3-2. Last season, Stamoulis played all 72 regular season games (and seven playoff games) for the Gwinnett Gladiators of the ECHL without scoring a goal.
4. The Royals face the Cincinnati Cyclones this Friday (Halloween Night) for the first time since the Cyclones eliminated the Royals from Kelly Cup Playoffs in Game Seven of the North Division Finals last year. The two teams will their re- spective affiliates' jerseys (Toronto & Montreal) for an 'original six' match-up.
5. The Royals game against the Idaho Steelheads this Saturday at the Sovereign Center marks the first time in team history that Reading has faced an opponent from the ECHL's West Division.
