Rattlers lose big in front of big crowd

FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The largest crowd to see the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers play at Fox Cities Stadium in 2005 saw the Rattlers lose their most lopsided shutout of the season. The Swing of the Quad Cities swung for twenty hits in a 13-0 win as 5,190 looked on. Chris Patrick and Jake Mullinax each had three hits and three RBI for Quad Cities. Juan Lucena had four hits and scored three runs. Matt Scherer pitched six scoreless innings and gave up just four hits for his third win of the season.

Quad Cities (39-33 overall, 3-0 second half) teed off on Rattler starter Julio Santiago in the top of the third inning. The collected five hits and three runs in the inning. Eric Verbryke, Spencer Wyman, and Matt Shepherd all had RBI singles during the third.

In the fourth, the Swing had seven straight hits and scored five runs to take an 8-0 lead. A throwing error after a Rick Ankiel double allowed the first run to score. Patrick followed with an RBI single. Verbryke singled to knock Santiago out of the game. Rattler reliever Steve Grasley was greeted by Mullinax with a two-run single. Wyman drove in the final run of the inning with another single. Wyman was out trying to go to second base for the second out of the inning. Shepherd doubled for the seventh and final hit of the sequence.

Wisconsin (39-34, 0-3) loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth inning, but did not score. Then, the Swing got rolling again in the top of the fifth. Lucena doubled in the first run. He would score on another single by Patrick. Later in the inning, Shepherd forced in a run with a bases loaded walk to make the score 11-0.

The Swing tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth. RBI singles by Patrick and Mullinax pushed the score to 13-0 in favor of the Swing.

Scherer walked three and struck out four for the win. Brian Miller worked two scoreless innings and Wayne Lundgren pitched a scoreless ninth to finish off the Rattlers.

The Rattlers will try to avoid the four game sweep Sunday afternoon. Jason Snyder (8-5, 3.53ERA) gets the ball for the Timber Rattlers as the starting pitcher. Kyle McClellan (1-3, 4.44ERA) is slated to start for the Swing. Game time is 1:05pm.
