Lansing Lugnuts News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Curtis Thigpen collected a pair of hits and drove in three runs and six different Lansing players collected multi-hit games as the Lugnuts(39-32, 2-0) collected 16 hits in an 11-2 win over West Michigan(33-39, 0-2) in front of 6,889 fans at Fifth Third Ballpark on Friday night. The win marks Lansing's fourth straight and moves them a season best seven games over .500.
For the second straight night in the series, the Lugnuts jumped out to the early lead. An RBI fielders choice off the bat of Luke Hetherington in the first scored Thigpen. In the second, Thigpen drove a pair of runners with a two-run single off Jair Jurrjens(5-3), putting Lansing up 4-0. Earlier in the inning, Ryan Klosterman tripled and scored on a single by Eugenio Velez.
After Danny Core(3-3) worked three scoreless frames, Jason Armstrong's RBI single in the fourth scored Yuber Rodriguez, putting Lansing up 5-0. In all, Jurrjens allowed a season high eight earned runs in four plus innings of work and allowed 10 hits.
The Whitecaps would score a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, capitalizing on miscues in the field by Klosterman and Velez. Brent Dlugach's single scored Jeff Frazier and Matt Parrish's groundout scored Wilkin Ramirez. Still, Core allowed no more damage in the frame and Lansing's bats would explode in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
The first seven hitters in the fifth reached off Jurrjens and Kevin Ardoin, getting RBI hits from Hetherington, Christian Snavely, Rodriguez, Velez and Thigpen. Eric Nielsen doubled to left. David Hicks singled to left sending Nielsen to third. A wild pitch by Jurrjens sent Hicks to second and set up Hetherington's RBI hit. Ardoin took over for Jurrjens and allowed Snavely's RBI hit. Klosterman was hit by a pitch and Rodriguez's two-run single made it 9-2. Velez followed with an RBI double, scoring Klosterman. Thigpen's sacfly plated Rodriguez and closed out the scoring. The six hits in an inning tied a season high for Lansing.
That would be plenty for Core, who worked his best outing of the season, allowing seven hits in 6.0 innings while allowing no earned runs. Scott Roy worked a scoreless seventh and eighth and Mark Sopko a scoreless ninth to ensure the victory. Dlugach and Justin Justice each went 2-4 in the loss for the Whitecaps.
Lansing goes for the series victory tomorrow night in Comstock Park as A.J. Wideman takes to the mound for the Lugnuts against West Michigan's Josh Rainwater. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark.
