Lansing Lugnuts News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - Eugenio Velez went 2-4 with three runs driven in and each member of the starting lineup collected at least one hit as the Lugnuts(40-32, 3-0) once again routed West Michigan(33-40, 0-3), this time by an 11-3 count in front of 9,035 fans at Fifth Third Ballpark on Saturday night. The win marks Lansing's fifth straight dating back to the end of the first half and establishes a new season-high for consecutive wins.
Once again, Lansing jumped out to an early lead and used a big inning to blow out the hosts. David Hicks collected a two-out, two-run homer off Josh Rainwater(1-3) in the first to spring Lansing into the lead. It was just the start of bad things for Rainwater, who would last only until the third inning and allowed a season high nine earned runs.
After Luke Hetherington threw out Wilkin Ramirez at the plate to end the second inning, the Lugnuts would turn their two-run lead into a 10-run bulge thanks to an eight-run third inning. Curtis Thigpen and David Hicks drew walks and with one out, Hetherington singled in Thigpen. Christian Snavely followed with a two-run double. Ryan Klosterman drew a walk and Yuber Rodriguez singled in a run to make it 6-0. Velez followed with a two-run single to right-center, chasing Velez. Lavon Lewis took over on the hill and allowed an RBI single to Jason Armstrong. Lewis's night was short as he had to leave for undisclosed reasons and Freddy Dolsi became the third pitcher of the inning for the Whitecaps. Thigpen doubled and Eric Nielsen collected an RBI single. Lansing's half of the frame came to an end when Hicks hit into a double play. In all, 12 men came to the plate as the Lugnuts set season highs for runs and hits in an inning.
Velez collected an RBI single in the fourth to plate Hetherington with the Lugnuts final run of the night.
A.J. Wideman(5-4) benefited from the offense and was outstanding on the mound, shutting out the Whitecaps for six innings. He allowed just a pair of hits, one an infield single, and walked a pair of hitters. In his last two starts, Wideman has allowed five hits in 12 innings.
The Whitecaps bullpen shut down the Lugnut offense the rest of the way and did not allow a hit after the fourth. In fact, the final 14 Lansing hitters were set down by Dolsi, Ian Ostlund and Anthony Tomey.
West Michigan got their runs in the seventh on a three-run homer by Josh Lee, his fourth of the season. The blast came off Po-Hsuan Keng, who recovered to set down the next three hitters and Joey McLaughlin worked the final two innings and allowed a pair of hits, but did not allow any runs.
The Lugnuts will go for the four-game sweep tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as Jordan Timm makes his Lansing debut against West Michigan's Andrew Kown at Fifth Third Ballpark.
