Albany River Rats News Release
ALBANY, NY - River Rats leading scorer Jerome Samson had a four point night with one goal and three assists, and goaltender Mike Morrison stopped 32-of-33 shots faced to lead Albany to a 6-1 win over the Binghamton Senators on Tuesday morning at the Times Union Center.
Rookie Stefan Chaput chipped in two goals with one assist, Zach Boychuk added a goal and two assists and defenseman Jay Harrison notched a pair of helpers as Albany won its first every 11:00 a.m. "Ratinee" day game.
Samson drew first blood with his team-leading 28th goal of the season from a sharp angle at 1:38 of the opening period. Albany doubled its lead on the power play at 14:11, when Boychuk drove behind the net for a wrap-around pass to Chaput at the doorstep. Nick Dodge made it 3-0 at 16:50, driving home a feed from linemate Steven Goertzen.
Morrison's only blemish came 49 seconds into the second period on a Senators power play, when Ryan Keller redirected a Derek Smith blast into the veteran net-minder's pads and shoveled home his own rebound. Chaput's second goal of the game made it 4-1 at 10:23, when an errant shot caromed from his skate to his stick for a quick put-away. Boychuk made it 5-1 in the final 1:54 of the second stanza, collecting a rebound from the end-boards and quickly drawing it to the front of the net for his 15th of the season.
Chris Terry scored the third period's only marker at 4:55, on a strong individual play that saw the rookie halt a Senators breakout, beat charging B-Sens goalie Andy Chiodo to the ensuing loose puck and pot his 14th of the year into the vacated net.
Morrison earned his first win of the season as Albany improved to 33-24-3-3 this season. Chiodo stopped 22-of-28 shots faced and took the loss, as Binghamton fell to 22-30-4-3 this year. The Senators out-shot the River Rats 33-28 and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Albany was 2-for-4 on the man-advantage.
Albany plays a crucial two game road series against the Norfolk Admirals on Friday and Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. River Rats 2009-10 flexible ticket packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
