Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose fought off a shark-attack on Tuesday night when they beat Worcester by a 3-1 score in front of 6,027 fans at MTS Centre. Sergei Shirokov, Pierre-Cedric Labrie and Matt Pope all notched goals for Manitoba while goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 34 of 35 shots in his 26th victory this campaign.
Manitoba suffered the first penalty of the game when Lawrence Nycholat was fined for interference at 5:09. A mere 10 seconds into their powerplay, the visiting Sharks found the back of the net when T.J. Trevelyan slapped the puck into the right side of the cage to open the scoring at 5:19.
A tripping penalty handed to Ryan Vesce at 8:04 turned the powerplay tables in favor of the Moose. Despite bringing their shot count to five on the man-advantage, the home team was unable to beat goaltender Alex Stalock during the two-minute span.
Manitoba broke onto the scoreboard at 4:31 of the second period. Tom Galvin's blast from the point was redirected into the net by Sergei Shirokov to knot the game at one goal apiece.
The Moose and Sharks exchanged powerplays in the early half of the middle frame, but neither team could capitalize on their respective advantage.
At 10:05 tempers flared behind Cory Schneider's net as Matt Moore and Brandon Mashinter exchanged words, and then punches, with Matt Pettinger and Guillaume Desbiens. After all was said and done, all the offenders were handed roughing penalties leaving play at even-strength.
The Moose stole the lead at 11:23. With an across the net pass from Marco Rosa, Pierre-Cedric Labrie slapped the disc into the open back door to take a 2-1 lead.
With five minutes left to play the Moose held onto their one-goal lead but the visitors owned the shot-clock 27-17. With 4:06 on the clock, the Moose stormed into the Sharks zone and Matt Pope notched his first goal of the season when he slung the puck over Salock to confirm a 3-1 victory for Manitoba.
LOOKING AHEAD The Moose close-out their four-game regular season series with the Sharks tomorrow night.
NEXT GAME Wednesday, March 3, 2010 - 7:30PM @ MTS Centre (7:30pm on CJOB Radio with Brian Munz & Jim Toth)
