Binghamton Senators News Release
ALBANY, N.Y. - The B-Sens departed for Albany last night in preparation for a rare 11 a.m. tilt with the East Division rival River Rats. Binghamton entered the game trailing a final playoff spot in the division by 12 points, while Albany was seeking a win to pull ahead of the Norfolk Admirals for sole possession of second place in the division.
The first period of play set the tone for the entire game.
Just 1:38 into the first, Rats leading scorer Jerome Samson battled with the B-Sens Tomas Kudelka behind the net. Samson broke loose, racing to the front of the net and fire a shot past Senators net minder Andy Chiodo, recently recalled from Elmira of the ECHL, low on the glove side to give his team an early lead. Stefan Chaput and Zack FitzGerald earned the assists.
With 5:49 left on the clock Chaput earned his second point of the night, scoring his eighth goal of the season on the power play to give the River Rats a 2-0 lead. Zack Boychuk picked the puck up behind the Binghamton net, although failing on the wrap around attempt, Chaput was able to pick up the rebound and tip it top shelf past Chiodo.
At the 16:50 mark of the first, Nick Dodge added insult to injury, scoring to give the River Rats a 3-0 lead heading into first intermission. Steven Goertzen shot the puck to the front of the B-Sens net to Dodge who was barreling in on the left wing side. Albany defenseman Jay Harrison also earned a helper on the play.
Just 49 seconds into the second period, the B-Sens would finally get on the board as Ryan Keller fired his 26th goal of the season past Rats' goaltender Mike Morrison to narrow the scoring gap 3-1. Derek Smith and the red hot Josh Hennessy earned the assists. For Hennessy that would be his tenth point in nine games.
The Rats answered midway through the second as Chaput scored his second goal of the game, earning his third point of the afternoon. Boychuk (18:06 of the second) and Chris Terry (4:55 of third) rounded out the scoring for Albany, cruising to the 6-1 victory and handing the B-Sens their eighth straight loss, and 12th straight road loss.
The Senators are back in action tomorrow, desperately looking to rebound as they travel to Lowell, Mass. to take on the Devils. Drop of the puck is 7:05 p.m.
