Abbotsford Heat News Release

Abbotsford, BC - The Providence Bruins were the last team to defeat the Heat on February 19th. On Tuesday night, they repeated the task, defeating the Abbotsford Heat 4-3 in a shootout at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre.

The Bruins opened the scoring on a shot from the left face off the circle by forward Craig Weller. Heat goalie David Shantz made the original save, but the rebound took an unfortunate bounce off the Heat defender and it squeaked past Shantz to give Providence the lead.

Abbotsford native David Van der Gulik would pull the home side even as he buried a shot past Bruins net minder Kevin Regan. Brad Cole fired the original shot from the blue line, Van der Gulik found a juicy rebound and made no mistake for his 10th of the season. But the visiting Bruins took the lead again before the 1st frame was through. Some nice passing led to a shot finished by Jordan Knackstedt for his 7th goal of the season. It was 2-1 after one period of play for the New England visitors.

The Heat would even the score in the second period on the power play as Brett Sutter would tip in a Josh Meyers wrist shot past Regan. Sutter's 9th of the season at 12:11 drew the two squads even heading to the third period.

Providence would take their third lead of the game in the third period when Mikko Lehtonen would beat Shantz with his team leading 22nd goal of the season. Bruins defender Jeff Penner would send Lehtonen away behind the Heat defence and the Finn would beat Shantz high glove side to make the score 3-2 Providence. However, the Heat would tie the game at the 16:07 mark of the third when Shawn Weller would deflect a Meyers point blast past Regan, his 5th of the season to force the extra frame.

The overtime period would solve nothing and the two teams would head to the shootout where Providence goalie Kevin Regan was flawless and Jordan Knackstedt would beat David Shantz for the second time in the match for the game winning goal.

These two teams will face off Wednesday for the fourth and final time this season, game time is 7:30 pm at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre. Catch all the action live on Country 107.1
