Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Jacob Rasner did not allow the cold, wet and windy weather to prevent him from turning in a dominant performance on the mound as the Warthogs starting pitcher guided Winston-Salem to its fourth consecutive victory with a 2-0 win over Potomac on Monday night at Ernie Shore Field. In game thats first pitch was delayed 20 minutes due to rain, Rasner (2-0) was stellar in limiting the Nationals to one hit in seven innings of shutout baseball. He has only allowed two runs in 18 innings of work this season while lowering his ERA to 1.00.
The Warthogs received all the run support they would need when Brandon Allen led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run off Potomac starting pitcher Jhonny Nunez. It was Allen's second consecutive game with a home run.
The Nationals hurler was equally impressive as he held the Warthogs to three hits and one run in six innings of work. Nunez (0-2) suffered the loss even though he finished with a season high 10 strikeouts.
A two-out rally against Potomac reliever Josh Wilkie in the seventh inning extended the Warthogs lead to 2-0. After the first two batters were retired, Winston-Salem got back-to-back singles by Billy Killian and Anderson Gomez to put runners on first and second. Sergio Miranda followed by lifting a double down the left field line to score Killian. Gomez was also waved around third base on the play, but the Nationals gunned him down at the plate to end the inning.
Ricky Brooks allowed a pair of hits in the eighth frame, but struck out Chris Marrero with runners on the corners to end the threat. Warthogs closer Kanekoa Texeira worked a perfect ninth to preserve the Warthogs first shutout and collect his third save of the season.
The second game of this three-game series is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 at 7 PM at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs will start RHP Matt Zaleski (0-0, 0.00), who was recently received from Double-A Birmingham. The Nationals will send LHP Cory VanAllen (2-0, 1.17) to the mound.
