Potomac Nationals News Release
WINSTON-SALEM - After having their game rained out yesterday, and not getting any batting practice today, the Nationals bats disappeared on Monday. On a soggy, rain-drenched night, Winston-Salem defeated Potomac 2-0 at Ernie Shore Field.
In a well-pitched contest, Winston-Salem starter Jacob Rasner (2-0) outmatched Jhonny Nunez with seven shutout innings. Rasner entered Monday having surrendered just two runs in 11 innings pitched. The right-hander allowed just one hit while striking out six and walking three.
Despite getting tagged with the loss, Nunez (0-2) pitched brilliantly over a season-high six innings in what could be considered one his finest starts as a professional. The 22-year-old matched a career high with 10 strikeouts including punching out the side in the fourth. However, Brandon Allen's solo home run to lead off the second inning snapped a 15 inning scoreless streak compiled by Nationals' starters, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Although they had three runners reach base prior, the P-Nats did not record their first hit until Leonard Davis singled in the fifth inning. The Warthogs limited the Nationals to a season-low three hits tonight, as the team's previous low had been five in a loss to Wilmington.
The Nationals put the tying run on first base in the eighth inning with consecutive singles, but Chris Marrero struck out swinging to end the threat.
Zech Zinicola, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, extended his scoreless innings streak to 9 1/3. Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. The Nationals will send Cory VanAllen (2-0, 1.17) on the mound against Matt Zaleski (0-0, 0.00) who has yet to pitch in 2008.
