Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (9-9) suffered through a four run fourth inning manufactured by the Lynchburg Hillcats (7-10), who went onto defeat the Pelicans 7-3 in the series opener at BB&T Coastal Field. On Greek/Toga Night, the Pelicans were unable to recover from the damage done in the fourth inning.

The Pelicans drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning against Hillcats starter Jared Hughes. Jon Mark Owings jump-started the inning with a double down the left-field line. Then, with one out, Gorkys Hernandez roped his league leading fifth triple of the season to the right field corner that scored Owings to give the Pelicans a 1-0 lead.

The Hillcats responded in thunderous fashion with four runs in the fourth to build a 4-1 lead. Angel Gonzalez led off the inning and nearly manufactured a run by himself. He singled and stole second. He would then advance to third on a ground out and score on a wild pitch by Cofield. Later in the inning, with one out and the bases loaded due to three walks issued by Cofield, left fielder Jared Keel tripled down the left field line to score Kent Sakamoto and Steve Lerud. The damage continued via a sacrifice fly ball down the right field line by Albert Laboy to score Keel from third.

The Pelicans battled back to within one run by scoring one run in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Jon Mark Owings hit a single to left field that was misplayed by Jared Keel allowing Ernesto Mejia to score all the way from first. Then, in the fifth, the Pelicans were aided by a Jim Negrych error on a Tyler Flowers hot shot to third that scored Gorkys Hernandez from second.

In the eighth, the Hillcats further extended their lead on a solo blast by Steve Lerud over the right center field wall.

Jeff Lyman, Bryan Dumesnil and Nick Fellman each pitched well in relief. Lyman went two innings and allowed only one run. Dumesnil also threw two innings, giving up one unearned run. Fellman's only blemish was the home run by Lerud.

The Winston-Salem Warthogs defeated the Salem Avalanche to leap frog into first place. The Pelicans are now 1.0 game behind the Warthogs for first in the Southern division.

Game two of the series against the Hillcats is set for Tuesday, April 22nd at 7:05 PM. The Pelicans will send right hander Ryne Reynoso (0-1, 6.00) to the mound. He will be opposed by Lynchburg righty Michael Crotta (2-1, 4.42). Fans that bring a South Carolina Education Lottery ticket will receive two Pelicans tickets for the price of one.
