Salem trips in Kinston opener

Kinston, NC-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, dropped the first of three at Grainger Stadium Monday night as Kinston scored four runs in the first three innings. The homestanding Indians (4-10) notched a 4-2 win against the Avalanche (9-8).

In the first, the Indians loaded the bases with the first three batters as Casey Hudspeth doled out two walks and allowed a single. Then, Hudspeth hit Jared Goedert with an 0-1 pitch to give the K-Tribe a 1-0 lead. The Indians would not score any more though as Nick Weglarz lined into a double play and Cirilo Cumberbatch bounced out.

In the second, Kinston scored again as Adam Davis poked a single to right to score Todd Martin. Even so, the Indians stranded another pair of runners.

The final K-Tribe runs crossed in the third on the combination of a Niuman Romero RBI single and an Adam Davis bases loaded walk.

Salem halved the lead in the fifth when Mark Ori plunked a two-run single down the left field line, but the Avs could not draw any closer.

The game featured thirtheen walks and four hit batters along with 23 combined runners stranded on base.

Salem and Kinston re-convene Tuesday night at 7 PM as lefty Douglas Arguello throws for the Avs against the Indians' Steven Wright.
