Rapid City Upends Wichita 3-1

Rapid City, SD - In a game that mirrored Tuesday night's affair between Wichita (21-12-3) and Rapid City (16-15-5), the Rush turned the tables on the Thunder and came out victorious 3-1 on Friday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Former Thunder netminder Tim Boron shut down the Thunder offense, which registered 36 shots on net. Wichita is 2-3-0 on its six-game road trip and leads the season-series over Rapid City, 3-2-0. The two teams finish their three-game series tomorrow night before the Thunder return home.
Rapid City has struggled to find the net first this season, but broke that trend tonight. Winston Day Chief got to a loose puck behind the Thunder net, tipped a pass in front and Damian Surma slipped it inside the left post to give the Rush a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game. Wichita picked up the offense and started to get its fore-check going, which gave the Thunder a chance to tie the game. At 12:45, Neil Trimm stole the puck in the left corner and fed a pass to Andrew Martens in the slot who one-timed it past Boron to make it 1-1. Rapid City came into the game scoring the first goal just 15 times.
The Rush re-took the lead with a pair of goals in the second. Jordan Behler put a shot on net from the point at 11:22 and gave the Rush a 2-1 advantage on the power play. Five minutes later, Scott Brannon caught a good bounce with a shot from the edge of the left circle that rode up over Kevin Regan and extended the lead to 3-1.
Wichita was unable to get another past Boron, despite out-shooting the Rush 12-6 in the final period. He made some key saves including a huge leg pad save on Greger Hanson after a scramble in front of the Rush net. Wichita pulled Kevin Regan with under two minutes left, but could not get another past the Rush goalie and Rapid City held on to win, 3-1
Martens scored for the second-straight game and Trimm recorded his 35th point with an assist. Regan lost for the ninth time this season, stopping 24 of 27 shots.
Wichita went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Rush were 1-for-3.
Wichita ends its six-game road trip tomorrow night against Rapid City at 8:05 p.m. central time. The Thunder returns home on Friday, January 18th against the Tulsa Oilers before heading back out on the road for two games in Tulsa.
