Blaze Hold off Mallards

BLOOMINGTON - The Bloomington Blaze, fueled by Mid-Illini Credit Union, kept a second period lead and beat the Quad City Mallards 3-2 on Friday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

The Quad City Mallards struck first when Mickey Lang made a slap shot from the face-off circle just 4:01 into the game. The Blaze couldn't convert for the remainder of the period.

The Blaze managed to even it up just four minutes into the second period when Kyle Bochek connected from the slot with assists from Travis Granbois and Tysen Dowzak. The Blaze took the lead with 13:35 left in the second when Tyler Gron shot a one timer.

The Blaze pushed the lead to 3-1 late in the third period when Gron caught a feed from Steve Makway and Jon Booras off a Mallard turnover and converted with 7:53 left in the period. With 14.3 seconds left in the game the Mallards scored when Mike Hellyer scored with an extra attacker but could not find the tying goal in the remaining seconds.

The Blaze will take on Oilers Saturday as they travel to Tulsa. The puck drops at 7:35 p.m. The next Blaze home game is next Friday when they face the Denver Cutthroats. Jr. Blaze fall: The Jr. Blaze lost 9-0 to the Tennyson Chevrolet on Friday in Michigan. The Jr. Blaze continue their Michigan trip and play the Great Lakes Lighting Saturday at 2 p.m.
