January 11, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Three Things You Need to Know
1.) Mavs Look for #5- The Missouri Mavericks (18-11-4) are currently tied with the Denver Cutthroats (18-12-4) for third place in the Berry Conference and head into Friday's game against the Tulsa Oilers (9-22-3) on a four-game win streak. The Mavs are 12-3-2 in their last 17 games and against the Oilers are 3-1 on the season with three consecutive wins. The Oilers have lost four straight games overall and 12 straight road games. The last road victory for the Oilers came two months ago on November 10 in Fort Worth. Colt King scored the game winning goal for Missouri in their last outing and has three goals, an assist and is a +3 in his last four games.
2.) Getting Familiar- It will be some familiar territory for four CHL teams this weekend when the Wichita Thunder (21-11-3) and the Rapid City Rush (15-15-5) battle on Friday and Saturday nights and the Allen Americans (24-5-2) and Fort Worth Brahmas (17-13-4) square-off on those nights as well. The Thunder have been in Rapid City all week beating the Rush 3-1 on Tuesday night and then staying over for the weekend games. Allen beat Fort Worth 4-3 on Tuesday and the two clubs will now play a home-and-home series with Friday's game at the Allen Event Center. The Americans have won seven straight games overall, tied for the longest win streak in the league this season, and six straight on home ice. This season, they are 5-1 against the Brahmas. Wichita leads the season series against Rapid City, three games to one.
3.) Thursday's Rewind- The Quad City Mallards (15-15-4) defeated the Bloomington Blaze (17-15-1) on Thursday night thanks to a hat trick from Mike Stinziani and a pair of helpers from Mickey Lang. With the 5-2 victory, the Flock pull even with Arizona for the final playoff spot. Quad City has now beaten Bloomington three times in their last five meetings. Neil Conway finished with 24 saves in the game improving to 6-1 with the Flock and 6-3-2 on the season. The Blaze have now lost four of their last five games overall.
By the Numbers
7: The number of consecutive decisions Missouri goaltender Mike Clemente has had without a regulation loss. In that stretch, the rookie is 5-0-2 and last week he allowed just three goals in three straight wins earning him the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week award. The Great Falls, Virginia native leads the CHL with 15 wins.
One-Timers
-Despite losing three straight decisions, Rapid City goalie Danny Battochio has played better than the numbers would show. On the season, he is 5-6-1 but is carrying a solid 2.28 goals against average (third in the CHL) and a .924 save percentage (third in the CHL).
-Arizona's Chad Nehring is still finding the back of the net with regularity scoring twice in Arizona's win in Quad City on Tuesday. Nehring has taken over the league lead with 22 goals on the season and in his last 11 games has 13 goals.
-The Denver Cutthroats are winless on their current 12-game road trip that has them away from home until February. The Fish are 0-1-2 earning points in two of three games so far and this weekend they head to Arizona for a pair of games. Denver has just one win in their last five games away from the Denver Coliseum.
-Tulsa could be without their top goal scorer this weekend as Gary Steffes has been called-up to the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL. Steffes has 19 goals on the season for Tulsa.
-John Snowden has been a great addition for the Fort Worth Brahmas scoring six goals with six assists in nine games. The forward is a +8 in his time with the Brahmas and in his last two games has scored four goals with two assists and a +6 plus/minus rating.
-The Wichita Thunder are the top when getting out to a quick start losing in regulation just once in 16 games when scoring the first goal. Overall, the Thunder are 13-1-2 when striking first. Allen and Denver are tied for the most wins when scoring first at 16.
-Despite being last in the league on the PK, the Missouri Mavericks have allowed just one power play goal in their last nine shorthanded chances. On the season, the Mavs are at 78.6 on the PK.
-The Quad City Mallards are the best closers in the CHL outscoring their opposition 37-31 in the final period. Last night in Bloomington, the Flock struck twice in the final frame and held the Blaze scoreless.
-Be sure to catch all of the action on CHL-TV all season long.
