Justin Bailey scored and added an assist in the Kitchener Rangers' 5-2 loss to the Owen Sound Attack on Friday night. Brent Pedersen also scored for the Rangers and Max Iafrate added a pair of assists.
Owen Sound attacked early, opening the scoring less than a minute into the first period. Import defenceman Damir Sharipzyanov hammered a shot from the blueline past Rangers starter Jordan DeKort to record his third of the season. Kurtis Gabriel earned the only assist on the Russian rookie's tally at 0:46.
The Rangers responded less than three minutes later, when freshman Ryan MacInnis carried the puck behind the Owen Sound net, finding Justin Bailey open in front. He slipped a shot between the pads of Attack netminder Brandon Hope, knotting the score a 1-1. Veteran rearguard Max Iafrate also picked up an assist on Bailey's tenth of the year, giving him points in three of his last four games played.
Sharipzyanov pushed the Attack back in front 1:20 later, soaring a shot by DeKort to pot his second goal of the night. Brett Hargrave and team scoring leader Gemel Smith earned assists on the play.
The goal prompted a Rangers' goaltending change, with Matthew Greenfield entering the game in relief of DeKort.
Kitchener led shots on goal 12-10 through the opening 20 minutes.
Brent Pedersen's third goal in four games pulled the Rangers even three minutes into the middle frame. The Carolina Hurricanes prospect picked up the puck on the power play, launching a low shot that slid under Hope for this ninth of the year.
The tally also extended Pedersen's recent point streak to a fourth game. Assists on the play were credited to Bailey and Iafrate, his seventh point in four games.
Owen Sound re-established their one goal lead just past the eight minute mark of the period, off the stick of Hargrave. His unassisted goal was his third of the season, all scored at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium.
The Rangers continued to lead shots on goal in the second period by a 13-8 margin.
Kyle Hope's eighth of the year extended the Attack's lead to 4-2 early in the third period. The overage forward buried a pass from Brayden Rose behind Greenfield for his second tally in as many outings. Jaden Lindo also earned a point with a helper on the play.
An empty net goal from Daniel Milne secured a 5-2 Owen Sound victory. Kurtis MacDermid assisted on the sophomore forward's sixth of the year.
Kitchener out-shot the Attack 13-8 in the final 20 minutes, finishing with a 38-26 overall advantage.
With the win, Owen Sound takes a 3-2 lead in the season series.
