Yes, Spit Happens: World Record Set

NORTH BAY, Ont. - North Bay Battalion fans set a Guinness World Record on Thursday night for the most people using mouthwash simultaneously.

An authenticated total of 1,974 among the Memorial Gardens crowd of 3,021 swished for 15 seconds and then spat the mouthwash into cups that were provided along with miniature bottles of the cleansing liquid, all donated by Oral B Crest and Henry Schein, Inc. for the occasion.

"It exceeded all my expectations, but it's sure a rigid process," said Dr. Mario Lemay of Callander Bay Dental Clinic, who conceived the event and pledged to donate 50 cents for each participant to One Kids Place Children's Treatment Centre of North Bay.

"Any little glitch can derail the whole thing. It was very tense for a while." The record attempt, which took place in the first intermission of what proved to be a 4-2 Ontario Hockey League victory by the Battalion over the Barrie Colts, was adjudicated by Michael Empric of the Guinness World Records office in New York. The previous record of 1,530 was set in October in New Jersey.

Empric said he monitors 40-50 Guinness World Record attempts annually in North, Central and South America. About 30 percent of attempts are unsuccessful, said the former Buffalo resident, who once adjudicated an attempt in North Bay to set a record for popping wheelies.

He said the biggest issue in the mouthwash-rinsing attempt was the 15-second duration of swishing.

"Anybody who does not do that will be removed from the final count," he noted before bottles were uncapped.

Lisa Boivin of the Callander Bay Dental Clinic served as emcee from the Battalion players' bench and instructed the crowd as to the procedure that would be followed. Students from Canadore College's dental hygiene program served as volunteers, as each section was monitored and counted as to participation.

Empric announced the results and presented a plaque acknowledging the record to Dr. Lemay.

Among the dignitaries taking part were North Bay mayor Al McDonald, Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming, and Laurie Braidwood of One Kids Place.
