Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs picked up a huge 5-4 overtime victory over the Frontenacs Friday night in Kingston! Jordan Maletta picked up the overtime winner on the powerplay, with the powerplay being a key for the IceDogs on the night, as they scored 4 of their 5 goals with the man advantage.

The IceDogs got off to just the quick start they were hoping to in the first, as Alexander Protapovich would open the scoring just 1:15 in to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for the IceDogs, Kingston would soon find the equalizer on the powerplay to tie things at 1-1. Undeterred, the IceDogs would answer back with a powerplay goal of their own as Brendan Perlini would score to give Niagara the lead again at 2-1. The lead would not last until the end of the period as Kingston would tie things back up again, scoring to send the teams into the intermission tied 2-2. Shots after 20 were 17-13 IceDogs.

In the second, the IceDogs would once again retake the lead on the powerplay, as this time Carter Verhaeghe would rip one home to make it a 3-2 game. Once again though, Kingston would score the next goal as the teams continued to exchange goals, tying things at 3-3. The IceDogs would continue to fight though and Aaron Haydon would get in on the scoring, adding a powerplay marker to give the IceDogs a 4-3 lead headed to the third. Shots after two were 30-26 Niagara.

The story of the third period would be IceDogs starter Brent Moran, who would make 21 saves in the frame. Unfortunately for the IceDogs, Moran's efforts would not be quite enough during a 5-on-3 penalty kill and Kingston would score the only goal of the period to tie it at 4-4 and send the game to overtime.

In the extra frame it would be the IceDogs continuing the theme of alternating goals and a strong powerplay, as Jordan Maletta would strike 2:32 into overtime on the powerplay to give the 'Dogs a huge 5-4 overtime victory!

Moran was huge on the night, stopping 45 of 49 shots for the win.

The IceDogs will now finish up their weekend tomorrow night in Belleville when they visit the Bulls at 7:05pm.
