
Rangers Acquire Forward James Sheppard

NEW YORK, March 1, 2015 - New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the team has acquired forward James Sheppard from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for the Rangers' own fourth round pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Sheppard, 26, has registered five goals and 11 assists for 16 points, along with 28 penalty minutes in 57 games this season. Sheppard has tied his career-high in goals this season. He has won 267 of 534 faceoffs he has taken this season (50%), and ranked third on the Sharks in faceoff win percentage among players who had taken at least 150 faceoffs in 2014-15. Sheppard posted a four-game point streak from Oct. 30 - Nov. 8, 2014, including a three-game goal streak from Nov. 1 - Nov. 8, 2014. He tied single-game career-highs with two assists/points on Dec. 4, 2014 vs. Boston.
The 6-2, 215-pounder has skated in 380 career NHL games with Minnesota and San Jose, registering 21 goals and 68 assists for 89 points, along with 183 penalty minutes. Sheppard made his NHL debut with the Wild on Oct. 10, 2007 vs. Edmonton, and he recorded his first career NHL assist/point on Oct. 24, 2007 at Calgary.
Sheppard has reached the playoffs on three separate occasions in his NHL career. He has skated in 24 career NHL playoff games, recording two goals and five assists for seven points, along with a plus-one rating and 14 penalty minutes. In the 2014 playoffs, he tallied six points (two goals, four assists) and posted a plus-three rating in seven games with San Jose. Sheppard tied for the team lead in assists and plus/minus rating, and tied for second on the Sharks in goals and points.
The Halifax, Nova Scotia native was originally selected by Minnesota in the first round, ninth overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
