Portland, Maine - The Springfield Falcons fell to the Portland Pirates, 2-1, this afternoon at the Cross Insurance Arena.

The loss moves Springfield to 32-20-6-0 on the season. The team maintains their second place positioning in the Northeast Division with 70 points. The Falcons have yet to top the Pirates in three match-ups this season. The teams will see each other once more on April 4 at the MassMutual Center.

Falcons goaltender Anton Forsberg wrapped up this weekend's three-in-three with a 2-1 record, turning aside 18 of 20 shots in this afternoon's loss. Pirates goaltender Mike McKenna stopped 32 of 33. While Springfield was not able to convert on three man-advantages, the penalty kill unit was successful in shutting down all seven Portland power plays.

All the scoring action happened in the second period of this contest. The Pirates were first on the board at the 8:01 mark. Brendan Shinnimin tossed out a centering pass from the end boards that was one-timed by Justin Hodgman from the slot. Jordan Szwarz grabbed the secondary assist.

During 4-on-4 play, Mike Hoeffel evened the score. He skated across the blue line and powered a wrist shot from the right circle just before the halfway mark of the period. Hoeffel is now on a three-game points streak, notching three goals and an assist.

A few minutes later, the Pirates were back on top. Jordan Martinook netted a shot off assists from Henrik Samuelsson and Dylan Reese to take the lead over the Falcons.

The Falcons were unable to come back and were downed by the Pirates, 2-1.

Springfield is back in action on Saturday, March 7 when they travel to face the Providence Bruins at 7:05 p.m.
