Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY -- Mike Sislo unloaded a one-timer 33 seconds into overtime to give the Albany Devils a 4-3 victory against the Binghamton Senators Sunday at Times Union Center.
After surrendering a 3-1 lead in the third period, the Devils went to work with the man advantage with 1:13 remaining in regulation. Once in overtime, Albany worked the puck along the perimeter before Joe Whitney setup Sislo from the right circle.
"It took a little bit to get into our set up, but once we did we moved it around and got a few good looks," Sislo said of playing 4-on-3 during overtime. "Fortunate to get it by the goalie there."
The win was the Devils second of a three-in-three weekend. They improve to 25-23-4-5. The Senators move to 22-26-7-1.
Paul Thompson, Darcy Zajac and Tim Sestito each scored during regulation. In goal, Scott Wedgewood made 24 saves for his eighth win of the season.
"I thought the guys focus was right," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "Everything was positive on the bench. It was tough last night with the way it happened, but we stuck with it tonight."
Binghamton received goals from Cole Schneider, Buddy Robinson and Carter Camper. Between the pipes, Peter Mannino made 31 saves.
Up And Down
After Schneider gave the Senators a 1-0 advantage with a power-play goal 2:40 into the game, the Devils netted three straight goals. Thompson scored at 14:11 from Scott Timmins and Whitney and Zajac redirected Raman Hrabarenka's point shot at 17:54.
More than 20 minutes later and during the dying seconds of the second period, Sestito rushed the puck out of the Devils end. He gave control to Sislo, who fired a shot off the right post. The puck sat behind Mannino in the crease and Sestito was able to get a stick on it with three seconds on the clock.
Binghamton responded with back-to-back goals in the third to force overtime. First Robinson redirected a shot at 6:10 and Camper scored at 17:14. The tying goal came seconds after the Devils had successfully killed off a five minute penalty.
"It definitely shows how razor thin the margin for error is out there," Sestito said. "We did a great job killing basically that five minute penalty. They get a stick on us trying to clear and they put one in. It was tough and a bit deflating, but I like how we responded."
Hello March
The Devils appear to be heading in the right direction. After dropping the first six games during February, the team has won three of its last five games. Entering the game, they were tied for 11th in the Eastern Conference and nine points out of a Calder Cup Playoff spot.
"Thank goodness, yes," Sestito responded when asked if the team was glad to be done with February. "We kind of mentioned that before the game, put that month behind us. We've got a big trip coming up and then a lot of home games. We've got to make some hay. We're off to a good start, 1-0 in March."
With six of the next 10 games at Times Union Center, Albany will have a chance to make up some ground. The team is 14-9-2-3 at home this season.
