Rampage Players Team up with Highlands High School to Help Local Rescue Dogs
March 9, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
With the assistance of Rampage forward Quinton Howden and defenseman Jonathan Racine, students from Highlands High School's (SAISD) Voices for Animals Club will care for and socialize four dogs from a local animal shelter. The event is part of Silver & Black Give Back's Team Up Challenge, which recognizes and rewards students who improve the San Antonio community through activities that are tied to classroom curriculum. These innovative projects are developed by students to address needs in their own neighborhoods or communities.
Concerned about the large number of stray and abandoned dogs that roam around the park adjacent to their school, the students from Highlands High School are aiming to improve the situation for residents and the animals in order to create a safer community.
The students are using photos and videos of the stray dogs as well as student-created flyers and partnering with animal care services to identify the stray dogs and find a proper living situation for the animals. The Voices for Animals Club will assemble their strategies to create a "Paws in the Park" toolkit that can be adopted in other communities.
The Team Up Challenge encourages students to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world, bringing education alive in powerful ways. Students create projects that address needs that will help improve their community in one of five categories: Arts & Culture, Education, Environment, Health & Wellness or Uniformed Services. As a premier initiative of Silver & Black Give Back, Spurs and Rampage players have worked alongside the students to help bring their vision to life. In April, five groups will be named finalists and will receive $20,000 to continue their service learning projects. Visit TeamUpChallenge.com for more information.
