Abbotsford Heat News Release
The San Antonio Rampage got a powerplay goal from Jeff Taffe in overtime to edge the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights 3-2 on Thursday night at the AT&T Center. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Knights.
The Rampage earned the early lead when former UNO Maverick Bill Thomas brought the puck down the right wing and tried to feed it in front to Taffe. The pass was knocked away but it came back to Thomas who seemed to knock it in off a defender. The goal was his sixth of the year.
The Knights took little time to tie the game in the second period. Defenseman Brad Ference spotted Tomi Maki behind the defense and hit him with a perfect pass. Maki roared in alone on goalie Josh Tordjman and beat him with a backhander for his first goal of the year.
Omaha got the go-ahead goal from an unlikely source later in the period. Off a face-off in the San Antonio zone, Richie Regehr got off a shot from the right point. Dave Moss knocked the puck down, and it bounced to Ryan Donally who swept home his second goal of the year. Donally was making the most of his ice time. He had been a healthy scratch in eight of the last ten Knights' games.
The Rampage began the third period with a powerplay, and they made it pay off just 40 seconds into the frame when Donald MacLean snapped in his fifth of the year to tie the game at two.
The Knights killed off a late penalty to Kris Chucko, a penalty that carried into overtime. But not long after Chucko emerged from the penalty box, Brandon Prust was assessed four minutes of penalties. It took the Rampage just 15 seconds to net the winner. Taffe knocked in a pass from Yanick Lehoux for his seventh goal of the year. Defenseman Bryan Helmer had the other assist, his third of the game.
The Knights are now 12-7-2-0. The two teams meet again on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
Three Stars 1. Josh Tordjman (SA) - 31 saves; 2. Tomi Maki (OMA) - 1 goal; 3. Jakub Koreis (SA) - 1 assist
