San Antonio Rampage News Release
HERSHEY, PA - Victor Tikhonov's goal with forty-eight seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 2-2 and forced overtime before San Antonio fell 3-2 at Hershey in a shootout before a crowd of better than 9,500 at the Giant Center.
Hershey got on the board in the first when Graham Mink deposited a rebound past Rampage goalie Josh Tordjman for a 1-0 lead 6:21 into the first period. Hershey outshot San Antonio 8-1 in the first half of the period before the Rampage came back to narrow the gap to 9-8 shots-on-goal through one frame.
With forty seconds remaining in the period, David Spina's power-play goal tied the game at 1-1 going to the second. Spina recorded his 12th goal of the season and Tikhonov tallied his fist assist in the silver and black after scoring a goal in his Rampage debut on Wednesday.
In the second, Hershey retook the lead when former Rampage defenseman Bryan Helmer sent a high wrister past Tordjman for his first goal of the season and a 2-1 Hershey lead at 10:19 of the second. Tordjman shutout the Bears, 3-0, on December 11th stopping all 41 shots.
Hershey continued to force the action outshooting San Antonio 25-12 combined in the second and third frames, but Tikhonov's game-tying goal forced sudden death overtime. After five more minutes of scoreless action, the game went into a shootout.
After Helmer was denied on his first attempt, Alexander Nikulin gave San Antonio a 1-0 lead through the first skater. Francois Bouchard tied it up in the third round finding the top right corner and evening the shootout at 1-1. Wyatt Smith gave the Rampage a 2-1 lead before Kyle Wilson tied it at 2-2 in the Bears' final attempt. Kevin Porter had a shot to win the game go wide and send it to extra frames.
In the top of the seventh, Wilson went high again beating Tordjman and giving Hershey their first lead at 3-2. Spina, needing to score to force an eighth frame was denied by Daren Machesney giving the Bears a thrilling 3-2 shoutout decision.
Tordjman stopped 36-38 shots keeping the Rampage in the game. This was the fifth shootout in nine games for Hershey and the second straight overtime loss for San Antonio. Still, the Rampage earned a point in their second straight as they continue their Rodeo Road Trip tomorrow in Rochester. The Rampage are 0-2-1-1 with points in back-to-back games on the trip so far.
