San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The Grand Rapids Griffins (8-7-0-1) registered five goals in the second period to defeat the San Antonio Rampage (9-4-1-0) 6-3 in their annual Cool School Day Game, presented by Wells Fargo, on Tuesday at the AT&T Center. Rampage forward Trent Vogelhuber recorded his 50th professional assist after contributing a helper on Samuel Blais' second-period goal.
After a scoreless first period, Grand Rapids took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play 5:59 into the second period when Evgeny Svechnikov hit a one timer past Rampage netminder Spencer Martin. Blais tied the game up at 7:57 after firing a shot past Griffins goaltender Tom McCollum from the left faceoff circle. The Silver and Black broke the tie 71 seconds later when Blais found Klim Kostin open in the slot, giving the Rampage a 2-1 advantage.
Grand Rapids tied the game at two after Matt Lorito found Matthew Ford open in the left faceoff circle 10:39 into the second frame. The Griffins took the lead after Eric Tangardi collected a rebound at 13:31 and hit a wrister past Martin. Filip Hronek extended the lead 16 seconds later with his second goal of the season, giving Grand Rapids a 4-2 advantage. Joe Hicketts made it 5-2, after taking advantage of a power-play opportunity at the 15:47 mark. After the fifth Griffins goal, the Rampage opted for a change in net as goaltender Ville Husso replaced Martin.
The Rampage tried to mount a comeback late in the final frame when Tage Thompson cut the lead to two after receiving a centering pass from Brendan Ranford at 16:50, but Corey Elkins secured the game for the Griffins with an empty-net goal with 84 seconds remaining to defeat the Rampage 6-3.
