DES MOINES, IA - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the Iowa Wild in a shootout on Sunday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA by a final score of 3-2. With the shootout setback, the Monsters are now 5-4-2-1 overall this season and with a .542 points percentage, remain alone in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.

Cleveland grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening period when Sam Vigneault deflected a Dean Kukan shot past Iowa net-minder Niklas Svedberg at 8:26 with Brady Austin collecting a secondary assist on the play. In the middle stanza, former Wild forward Jordan Schroder took advantage of even-strength feeds from Doyle Somerby and Paul Bittner to make it 2-0 Monsters at 14:20, but back-to-back five-on-five goals from Iowa's Landon Ferraro and Zach Palmquist, at 17:42 and 18:49 respectively, left both teams tied at two through 40 minutes of play.

After a scoreless third period and overtime frame, Iowa's Sam Anas scored in the first round of the Monsters' first shootout of the season, and after Svedberg stopped Terry Broadhurst, Schroeder, and Bittner in three rounds, and Cleveland's Brad Thiessen denied Wild forwards Zack Mitchell and Ferraro in the shootout's second and third rounds, respectively, Iowa emerged victorious by a final score of 3-2.

With the shootout loss, Thiessen is now 4-1-2 in net for Cleveland this year following a 24-save performance, while Svedberg improved to 4-6-1 between the pipes for the Wild by virtue of a 24-save showing in regulation and overtime.
