November 4, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Antonio Rampage News Release
San Diego, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2015) -The San Antonio Rampage (5-0-2-0) fell to the San Diego Gulls (7-1-0-0) 3-2 in overtime in front of 5,378 at the Valley View Casino Center Tuesday night. The Silver and Black rallied in the third period, scoring two unanswered goals to force the contest into overtime, but ultimately fell in the extra frame. San Antonio is the only team in the league that remains unbeaten in regulation.
In the ninth minute of the first period, San Diego's Nick Ritchie buried a pass from Antione Laganiere to put the Gulls ahead 1-0. The goal came on the first power play opportunity of the night following Troy Bourke's tripping call at the 7:02 mark. San Antonio entered the first intermission trailing 1-0.
Late in the second stanza, the Gulls scored their second of the game off a 3-on-2 breakaway, and the Rampage found themselves facing a two-goal deficit for the first time all season. San Antonio held a 21-18 advantage in shots heading into the second intermission, but still trailed 2-0.
San Antonio mounted a third-period comeback beginning with Michael Schumacher's first goal of the season at the 1:44 mark. Less than five minutes later, the Rampage tied the game at two on an Andreas Martinsen goal. Colin Smith's shot was stopped by Gulls goaltender John Gibson but he left the rebound on the crease, allowing Martinsen to finish the loose puck and force the game into overtime.
In the fourth minute of the extra frame, Ritchie potted the game winner to secure the 3-2 win for the Gulls and snap San Antonio's five-game winning streak that began on Oct. 16.
Pickard finished with 34 saves on 37 shots. The Rampage were 0-for-5 on the power play, while the Gulls converted one of their four opportunities with the man advantage.
Key Stat
Rampage left wingers Schumacher and Martinsen each recorded their first goal of the season and first in a Silver and Black sweater. Martinsen's game-tying goal and five shots earned him the Third Star of the Game.
