Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers notched their second walk-off win in their last two games after besting Sacramento 5-4 in extra innings at Cheney Stadium on Monday.
With the game tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the 10th inning, outfielder Mike Wilson blasted a single to left that drove in third baseman Matt Mangini from second for the game-winning run. The win was the Rainiers third straight over the River Cats and clinched the team's 12th series win of the season.
The rally was necessitated after Sacramento posted a come-from-behind performance of their own in the top of the ninth. River Cats shortstop Steve Tolleson lead off the inning with a solo home run that erased a 4-3 Rainiers lead and set the stage for the two to meet in extra innings.
Tacoma originally took the lead in the third inning thanks to a pair of home runs. Shortstop Matt Tuiasosopo hit a two-run bomb that gave the Rainiers a 2-1 lead. Two outs later, first baseman Brad Nelson belted a solo shot that increased the advantage to two runs.
Nelson ended the day leading the Rainiers lineup after recording three hits and one RBI, with a double and the home run in the sixth. First baseman Chris Carter fronted the Sacramento offense, posting two doubles and two RBI en route to going 4-for-5.
Reliever Levale Speigner picked up his fourth win of the season for the Rainiers after allowing one run on two hits with two walks over two innings of work in the ninth and 10th. The loss went to River Cats reliever Jonathon Hunton after the right-hander gave up the game-winning run on two hits through one inning.
The Rainiers now head to Fresno to begin a four-game series with the Grizzlies at 7:05pm on Tuesday night. Left-hander Luke French is scheduled to get the start for the Rainiers, with right-hander Daryl Maday going to the mound for Fresno.
