Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. -- The Tacoma Rainiers suffered an 11-4 season-opening loss to the El Paso Chihuahuas at Southwest University Park on Thursday night.

Tacoma rebounded from an early 2-0 deficit with a four-run, six-hit effort in the top of the third inning. Third baseman Carlos Rivero was responsible for the Rainiers first run of the season after hitting a solo homer to lead off the inning, and James Jones knotted the score at 2-2 with an RBI triple three batters later.

Stefen Romero put Tacoma on top with a run-scoring single in the club's next at-bat. Catcher John Hicks accounted for the Rainiers final trip onto the scoreboard after grounding into a force out that plated Romero with two outs.

The Rainiers lead lasted until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Chihuahuas scored an insurmountable five runs on five hits and one error.

Tacoma tallied a total of 11 hits in the season opener, thanks in large part to two-hit efforts turned in by Rivero, Romero, Jesus Montero, Franklin Gutierrez and Ketel Marte. Along with Jones' triple and Rivero's home run, Gutierrez's double in the fifth proved to be the team's only other extra-base hit.

Rainiers starter Jordan Pries (0-1, 13.50) was dealt the loss after surrendering six run on nine hits over 6.0 innings of work. The right-hander fanned two and walked one in his first turn in Tacoma's rotation this season.

The Rainiers (0-1) play the second game of a four-game set at El Paso (1-0) at 6:05 p.m. tomorrow, April 10. Left-hander Roenis Elis (0-0, -.--) is expected to make his season debut for the Rainiers in the contest. Right-hander Aaron Northcraft (0-0, -.--) is slated to start for the Chihuahuas.
