Round Rock Express Suffer First Loss of 2015 in Oklahoma City

April 10, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma - The strength of the Oklahoma City Dodger lineup proved to be too much for the Express as they fell to the Dodgers, 6-5. The E-Train now moves to 1-1 on the young season and will square off for two more with Oklahoma City in the season-opening series. Starting pitcher Luke Jackson (0-1, 11.25) got into trouble early, giving up five runs in the 1st inning that were all earned. Jackson finished with 4.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 2 HR, 3 BB and 2 K. Carlos Frias (1-0, 5.06) received the starting nod for the Dodgers and gave up 8 hits, 3 runs (3 earned) and 1 HR while striking out 5 Round Rock batters in 5.1 innings of work.

The 1st inning saw plenty of fireworks, but not the kind of fireworks Express fans like to watch on Fridays at Dell Diamond. Dodger shortstop Enrique Hernandez hit a two-run shot to left center field, resulting in the first home run given up by an Express pitcher in 2015. Four batters later, Oklahoma City's catcher Austin Barnes went yard with a three-run blast. The lone bright spot for the Express in the 1st inning was a stand-up triple hit by 2014 PCL All-Star Jared Hoying to lead-off the game. Hoying later scored on a Michael Choice RBI.

Jackson regained his composure in the 2nd inning with three consecutive groundouts to retire the side and received some much needed run support from teammate Tommy Field in the 3rd inning. Field took Frias deep to left center field with a solo shot that marked the first Round Rock home run of 2015. Field's home run was also hit first hit of the year, raising his average to .125.

Tomas Telis, Jared Hoying and Carlos Peguero each recorded a hit this evening, resulting in all three extending their hit streaks to two games. Telis finished the game 3-for-4 and is now batting .500 for the year. Hoying went 1-for-5 with a triple and a run, putting his average at .222. Peguero's herculean power was evident, going 2-for-3 with a triple and one run, bring his average to .667. Trever Adams joined the hit parade in his first Triple-A start. Adams hit a single in his first-ever Triple-A at-bat in the top of the 2nd inning and recorded his second hit of the night with a line drive to right field in the sixth, resulting in another single. Round Rock out-hit Oklahoma City, 13-9.

RHP David Martinez was the first Round Rock pitcher to make his way out of the bullpen in the 5th inning for his first outing of 2015. Martinez pitched 2.0 innings and struck out 4 Dodgers with 0 hits, 0 runs and 1 walk allowed. Martinez threw an impressive 6th inning with three consecutive swinging strikeouts. LHP Jimmy Reyes replaced Martinez in the 7th inning for his first appearance of the season. Reyes threw one shutout inning with a hit and a strikeout.

1B Ed Lucas provided a spark in the top of the 8th inning with a RBI single that brought RF Ryan Strausborger home to cut the Dodger lead to 5-4. Strausborger had reached on a double in his first at-bat of the year and used his swift speed to score from second.

Ross Wolf came in to pitch the 8th inning, but could not withstand the momentum shift that gave Oklahoma City a 6-4 lead. Wolf gave up back-to-back singles to Hernandez and 1B O'Koyea Dickson to put runners on first and second. Hernandez scored on a Scott Schebler single, but Wolf was later bailed out of the inning on a 6-4-3 double play.

The Express continued to battle into the 9th inning as Michael Choice recorded his second RBI of night, scoring Alberto Hanser from second. The rally ultimately fell short as Ryan Strausborger popped up to Dodger 3B Buck Britton in foul territory to end the game.

LHP Wandy Rodriguez takes the hill tomorrow for the E-Train against the Dodgers RHP Zach Lee. The first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on www.hornfm.com .
