MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds rode a pair of early home runs to power past the Iowa Cubs, 8-1, on Friday night at AutoZone Park.

First baseman Xavier Scruggs homered for the second game in a row, adding a grand slam in the second inning. Outfielder Stephen Piscotty also went yard in the win.

Redbirds starter Tim Cooney (1-0) picked up the win in his season debut, allowing one unearned run on four hits and three strikeouts in six innings of work.

Memphis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, beginning with Piscotty's towering home run over the left field foul pole. Scruggs followed by singling and coming around to score on a Greg Garcia double combined with an Iowa fielding error.

The Redbirds tacked on five more in the second inning, highlighted by Scruggs' grand slam over the Redbirds bullpen. Third baseman Ty Kelly worked a bases-load walk before Scruggs' blast.

Memphis' final run came in the sixth inning as pinch hitter Mike O'Neill came home to score on a Dean Anna (2-for-5, RBI, R) single.

Iowa's lone run was scored in the third inning on a Cody Stanley throwing error during a stolen base attempt.

Dean Kiekhefer, Miguel Socolovich, and Sam Tuivailala each added a scoreless frame in relief.

Memphis and Iowa continue their series at 6:05 pm on Saturday night at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Zach Petrick will toe the rubber for Memphis against Iowa lefty Eric Jokisch. The first of 12 fireworks shows will take place after the game. Gates open at 5 pm.
