Urena Calms Storm Chasers in Zephyrs' 4-1 Win
April 10, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Jose Urena allowed one run over six innings to win his Triple-A debut, lifting the New Orleans Zephyrs past the Omaha Storm Chasers on Friday night, 4-1.
Touted as the Marlins' fourth-ranked prospect entering the season, the 23-year-old right-hander did not disappoint by limiting Omaha to four hits over the first six innings, with five strikeouts and one walk.
Back-to-back singles by Matt Fields and Cheslor Cuthbert prompted Zephyrs manager Andy Haines to remove Urena (1-0) after just 81 pitches. But Salvador Sanchez came on to get a pop out, a strikeout and an inning-ending ground out to keep the Storm Chasers off the scoreboard.
Sanchez added a scoreless eighth inning, and Nick Masset erased memories of Thursday's blown save by working around a leadoff single by Fields in the ninth to nail down the victory.
"It was impressive, six strong innings," Haines said of Urena's performance. "A couple of bloop hits, we took him out just to protect him a little bit. But a very impressive outing and a great start to his season."
Derek Dietrich provided Urena with an early 1-0 lead, belting a towering home run over the right field fence in the second inning off Omaha starter Joe Blanton. It was Dietrich's eighth home run in 23 career games with the Zephyrs.
New Orleans doubled the lead the following frame. Jordany Valdespin singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored when Justin Bour beat Omaha's defensive shift by ripping a single to left.
Valdespin has collected three hits in each of the season's first two games, with a double and a triple.
The Storm Chasers plated their only run in the fifth on an RBI single by Jose Martinez, but the Zephyrs answered an inning later by loading the bases with no outs against reliever Scott Alexander. Brady Shoemaker's slow grounder to second scored a run, and another trotted home on a wild pitch.
Blanton (0-1) was charged with the loss after surrendering two runs and five hits in five innings.
The Zephyrs and Storm Chasers meet in the third game of the series on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Z's will start left-hander Adam Conley against Omaha right-hander Christian Binford.
