TACOMA, Wash. -- The Tacoma Rainiers suffered a 9-0 shutout loss to the Reno Aces at Cheney Stadium on Wednesday night.

The defeat marked the Rainiers sixth shutout loss of the season and fifth at home. Tacoma has now dropped 16 consecutive games to the Aces dating back to July 9 of the club's 2011 campaign.

Reno jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning after second baseman Jake Elmore's sacrifice fly drove in outfielder Adam Eaton from third.

In the fifth, Stephen Drew and Ryan Wheeler combined to account for four of the five runs the Aces hung on the Rainiers after hitting back-to-back home runs with two outs. Drew hit a three-run homer, and Wheeler added a solo shot in Reno's next at-bat.

The Aces tallied three more runs on the seventh thanks to Wheeler's RBI-single and a two-run double hit by third baseman Geoff Blum.

The Rainiers combined to collect seven hits in the contest, with Carlos Peguero and Vinnie Catricala each turning in 2-for-4 performances.

Jarrett Grube (0-4) was dealt a loss after making a spot start in place of right-hander Jeff Marquez, who was scratched due to illness. Grube surrendered six runs on six hits and struck out three over 5.0 innings of work.

Reliever Chance Ruffin gave up three runs on three hits over 1.2 innings out of the bullpen. Josh Kinney (1.1) and Bobby LaFromboise (1.0) combined to toss 2.1 scoreless frames and recorded four strikeouts.

The Rainiers (29-43) take the field for the third leg of the club's four-game series with the Aces (45-28) tomorrow, June 21. Right-hander Blake Beavan (0-0, 5.40) is slated to start for Tacoma against left-hander Patrick Corbin (3-1, 3.45) for Reno. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
