The Cubs added their second run in the seventh inning. With two outs, Brian Esposito walked and scored on a double by Ty Wright. The only other Cubs' hit was a two-out double by Brett Jackson in the sixth inning.

Cubs' starter Frankie De La Cruz (1-2) was charged with five runs, but only two were earned over 4.2 innings. Nelson led off the bottom of the fifth inning with his ninth home run of the season. With one out, Butler walked and would eventually score on a wild pitch as Luis Martinez struck out and reached first base. De La Cruz had three wild pitches in the game.

Ryan Rowland-Smith came in to get the final out in the fifth inning and pitched a scoreless sixth. Mike MacDougal allowed a run on three singles in the seventh inning. Jeff Beliveau pitched a scoreless eighth.
