Hot Hitting Continues for Sox in 9-5 Win

Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (35-38) were held without a hit for the first three innings by the Salt Lake Bees (36-38) but then the Sox bats exploded for nine runs over the next three innings of the ballgame to take the third game of the series 9-5. The Sky Sox have amassed 38 runs and 57 hits in their last four games.

After the Bees jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-RBI single by leftfielder Doug Deeds in the third inning, the Sky Sox offense was awoken by Colorado Springs designated hitter Andrew Brown's team-leading tenth home run of the season in the fourth inning, his second straight game with a homer, and Sox third baseman Brandon Wood singled to drive in the go-ahead run in the inning. Colorado Springs took the momentum from the three-run fourth and blew open the game with a five-run fifth inning, with first baseman Matt McBride doubling in two runs and Wood adding two more RBI to his night with a single. Brown and Wood are tied for the team lead with 18 RBI in June.

After snapping a streak of six straight losses in his June 15 win in Las Vegas, Sky Sox starter Rob Scahill earned his second straight win by striking out seven over his 5.1 innings of work. Scahill has now totaled 84 strikeouts on the season, the most on the Sky Sox pitching staff and second most in the Pacific Coast League, and is one of only four pitchers in the league with 80 or more strikeouts. Scahill exited the game in the sixth inning after Salt Lake trimmed the Sox lead to 8-5 on a three-run shot by second baseman Adam Heether, the first homer allowed by the Sky Sox in eight games, but Colorado Springs bullpen held the Bees to only two hits the rest of the game to seal the win.

The Sky Sox totaled 10 hits in the game, the eighth time in the last ten games that Colorado Springs has reached the double-digit mark in hits. One notable Sky Sox without a hit in the game was rightfielder Tim Wheeler, who was held hitless for only the second time since returning to the Sox lineup on June 1 and snapped his 17-game hitting streak. It was his first career game at Security Service Field that Wheeler did not collect at least one hit.

The win moves the Sox back to within a half game of second place in the Pacific Northern Division, and was only the second time Colorado Springs has held Salt Lake to less than six runs in their seven meetings. The Sox will look to move in to sole possession of second place and win the series as they send out former Salt Lake Bee Tyler Chatwood (0-2, 6.34 ERA) to match up with Bees left-hander Greg Smith (2-4, 2.89 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. MT.
