Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (34-38) lost out on an opportunity to move past the Salt Lake Bees (36-37) and in to second place in the Pacific Northern Division, because the Bees bats had other plans as roared out of the gates with nine runs in the first three innings to cruise to a 13-5 victory in the second game of the four-game series.

Salt Lake put up three runs in the first inning, but the Sky Sox were able to respond with two runs of their own in the first frame on leftfielder Andrew Brown's team-leading ninth homer of the season, upping his team-leading total to 55 RBI on the season. From there the Bees took over scoring seven unanswered runs over the next three innings to quickly put together a 10-2 lead and give them more than enough offense to even the series at a game apiece. Salt Lake centerfielder Kole Calhoun led the way for the Bees going 4-for-6 with three RBI, and was a home run away from the cycle.

The first Salt Lake batter reached base and scored in the first five innings of the game, and the Bees were not retired in order in any inning of the game. Sky Sox starter Carlos Torres (3-4, 4.59 ERA) suffered the loss giving up nine runs in 2.2 innings, but it was only the second time in eleven starts this season for Colorado Springs that the right-hander has allowed more than three runs in a start.

Brown's first inning homer was a part of a 4-for-5 performance, his third straight multi-hit game, and the Sox outfielder leads all of Triple-A with 48 RBI since the beginning of May. Colorado Springs centerfielder Tim Wheeler was the only other Sox batter beside Brown to put together a multi-hit game extending his team-high hitting streak to 17 games, the longest hitting streak by a Sky Sox player this season. With the two hits in the game, Wheeler still has yet to play a game at Security Service Field without collecting at least one hit.

The Sky Sox have lost four of six games to Salt Lake so far this season, and have allowed more than five runs to the Bees in all but one of those six games. In the third game of the series, Colorado Springs will send out right-hander Rob Scahill (4-8, 5.90 ERA) to match up with Bees righty Eric Hurley (6-5, 4.80 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. MT.
