Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
EAST LAKE, OH - After starting the season at home and losing three of four the Lakewood BlueClaws are back at the .500 mark as they beat the Lake County Captains by a score of 10-3. The game was ended in the seventh inning due to rain. The win for the BlueClaws (3-3) is the second in a row, and for the second game in a row, the team scored more runs in one game than they did in their first four combined.
The BlueClaws erased an early 1-0 deficit in what was a big third inning for the visitors. Zach Collier led the inning off with a walk, followed by a single by Leandro Castro and an RBI groundout for Harold Garcia. The BlueClaws would then get the next three batters on, Anthony Gose by error, Mattair walked and Travis d'Arnaud singled. Castro scored on the single by d'Arnaud and Gose scored on a wild pitch. Sebastian Valle ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right which brought home Mattair. The inning gave the BlueClaws a 4-1 lead.
The fourth inning was again kind to the BlueClaws as they added two more runs to extend their lead to 6-1. Collier led the inning off with a double and Castro walked before Mattair singled them both home with two outs.
In a game played in a moderate rain, the BlueClaws poured on more runs in the fifth as Collier tripled home both Murphy, who doubled to lead off the inning, and Troy Hanzawa who singled. Collier was then brought home on a Castro sacrifice fly. Three runs in the fifth made it 9-1.
Tyler Cloyd (1-0), in his second start of the season, started slow by allowing a first inning run, but then set down eight straight batters as he pitched into the fourth inning. However he ran into a little of trouble in the bottom of the fifth, allowing two runs on three hits, the most damaging was a one-out triple by Adam White making the score 9-3. All told, Cloyd went six innings, allowed three runs on three hits and struck out four.
After throwing six shutout innings in his first start of the season, Joey Mahalic (0-1) went only three innings for the Captains (1-5) and allowed four runs before being lifted in favor of Russell Young, who didn't fair much better. Young allowed five runs in three innings. Santo Frias entered the game in the seventh inning and could never grip the wet ball properly, allowing back-to- back hits to Jim Murphy and Valle before the game was delayed and then ended due to rain.
Murphy went 3-for-3 for the BlueClaws and Collier went 2-for-2 with two extra base hits. The BlueClaws have scored 22 runs and collected 27 hits in the past two games after scoring ten runs with 29 hits.
Looking to make it three in a row, the BlueClaws will finish their series with the Captains on Wednesday at 630 pm with righty Jason Knapp on the mound. In his first start of the season, Knapp consistently threw 94 mph with his fast ball, hitting as high as 97. He went 5 2/3, allowing two runs and striking out a career-high 10 batters. He will be opposed by lefty TJ House.
