Suns Drop Home Opener To Delmarva, 2-1

Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - With an assist from some wild play in the field and on the mound by the visiting Delmarva Shorebirds (4-2), the Hagerstown Suns (4-2) cracked double digits for the first time in 2009 in an 11-5 victory at Municipal Stadium.
The first home win of the season for the Suns was fueled in large part by the scorching presence of catcher Derek Norris at the heart of the Hagerstown lineup. The cleanup hitter reached base in four of his five trips to the plate, including his second homerun of the season.
Just as key to the Suns win as Norris's three-run, two-RBI night were the three errors by Delmarva fielders and the five walks and two hit batsmen surrendered by Shorebird pitchers.
The Suns trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but that frame saw seven sloppy runs cross the plate as Hagerstown turned a two-run deficit into a five-run lead. Center fielder Chris Curran and second baseman Steve Lombardozzi led the inning off with singles before a shot by Norris up the middle pulled the Suns within a run and chased Delmarva starter Richard Zagone (0-1).
Right-hander Andy Schindling replaced Zagone and was hardly effective for the Shorebirds, hitting the first batter he faced, before walking two straight Suns and giving up a three-run double to left field by Hagerstown left fielder Robbie Jacobsen. Schindling left the game without retiring a batter, and was charged with four runs, three of them earned. Norris's no-doubt homer to centerfield pushed the Suns' lead to six in the sixth, and a sacrifice fly from third baseman Steven Souza in the seventh closed out the Hagerstown offensive output.
Austin Garrett (1-0) picked up the win for the Suns in relief of starter Brad Peacock, hurling three innings of one-run, two-hit ball. Fellow relievers Justin Phillabaum and David Slovak held the Shorebirds scoreless over the eighth and ninth innings to close out the victory.
