Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Walter Ibarra's redeeming walk-off single in the bottom of 10th inning secured the Charleston RiverDogs' 2-1 triumph over the Augusta GreenJackets in South Atlantic League action Tuesday evening in front of 2,072 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Tied in the tenth inning, Charleston's Dan Brewer singled to right field that set up Mike Lyon, who followed with a shallow fly that landed in front of Augusta's centerfielder. With runners on the corners and none out, Ibarra singled on a 0-2 pitch to center and plated Brewer for the game winning run.
With the victory, Charleston has won four consecutive games and improves to 4-1 while Augusta slips to 1-4.
Ibarra, who was charged with two errors on one first inning play, redeemed himself with the game-winning hit.
Pat Vindettte, pro baseball's only switch-pitcher, pitched the final two frames to secure his first win of the season having already collected a pair of saves. In the process, Vindette faced seven batters and fanned five while pitching left-handed to one GreenJacket and right-handed to six.
Augusta jumped on the board quickly in the first inning when Francisco Peguero lined a leadoff single and Johnny Monell reached when he was hit by a pitch. After a double play allowed Peguero to reach third, RiverDogs second baseman Walter Ibarra bobbled a routine ground ball for an error that plated Peguero for the GreenJackets' first run.
Charleston knotted the score at 1-1 when David Adams led off the fourth inning with a double that set up Abraham Almonte, who laced a single to right that plated Adams.
RiverDogs starter Brett Marshall continued the trend of quality starting pitching for Charleston. Despite a no-decision, Marshall surrendered one unearned run, two hits, two walks and a strikeout one in six innings of work.
Augusta starter Eric Surkamp pitched five full frames and allowed one run on three hits while walking one and striking out nine. Reliever Andrew Reichard (0-1) threw the final four innings and allowed one run on six hits while striking out five and walking none.
The RiverDogs collected nine hits for the game with Melky Mesa and Mike Lyon each recording two.
Charleston's pitchers limited the GreenJackets to only four hits with no one getting more than one.
Charleston relievers Hector Noesi and Venditte combined to silence the GreenJackets by not allowing a run and combined struck out five while scattering two hits over the final four innings.
Almonte, who got a single in the fourth inning, now has a five-game hitting and four-game RBI streak.
The second game of this brief two-game series is set for Wednesday at 7:05 pm with Charleston sending 6-10 right-hander Andrew Brackman (0-1, 9.00 ERA) to the hill while Augusta counters with lefty Aaron King (0-0, 0.00 ERA).
