
Rome Wins Home Opener

Rome, GA - The Rome Braves defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats 7-6 in their home opener in front of 3,626 fans. The win extends their record to 5-2 in home openers and 2-4 overall on the season.
The Sand Gnats took the early lead in the first inning when Jordany Veldespin singled and later moved to third on a wild throw by Gerry Rodriguez. He crossed the plate when Wilmer Flores grounded into a double play giving Savannah a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second the Braves came back and took the lead with five runs highlighted by a three run homer by David Ross to give Rome a 5-1 advantage. The Braves added two more runs in the third inning with one run coming off a Joel Campusano solo shot for the 7-1 score.
In the top of the fourth the Sand Gnats scored three runs to inch back into the game aided by two fielding errors by the Braves making the score 7-4. The Sand Gnats made it a 7-6 game in the fifth as Sean Ratliff singled home two runs but the Rome bullpen shut them down the rest of the way.
Richard Sullivan gets the win (2-0) for Rome, Benino Pruneda the save (1), and Kyle Allen takes the loss for the Sand Gnats (0-1).
