Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

Charleston, WV (April 14, 2009) - Chase D'Arnaud and Calvin Anderson both provided three hits a piece and Eddie Pena delivered a clutch pitching performance on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park as the West Virginia Power captured their first win of the season with a 5-3 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods.

The Hot Rods wasted no time getting started, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Anthony Scelfo began the inning with a single and scored on a passed ball. Henry Wrigley delivered a run scoring single to complete the two-run frame. The Power cut the lead in half in the fourth inning. With Calvin Anderson on third and two outs, Bobby Spain hit a pop up that landed in the middle of the infield, allowing Anderson to score. Spain was credited with an RBI single.

Quincy Latimore ripped a two-out triple in the fifth inning and scored the tying run on D'Arnaud's double. The Power scored twice to take the lead in the sixth inning. Anderson began the inning with a base hit and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Edward Garcia ripped a single and scored on Josue Peley's base hit. The Power scored their final run in the seventh inning on Anderson's RBI single.

Bowling Green plated their final run in the eighth inning. Brian Leach walked the bases loaded, before surrendering a one-out RBI single to Scelfo. Eddie Pena was then called upon to put an end to the threat with the bases full and one down. He struck out Tim Beckham on seven pitches to record the first out before retiring Jason Tweedy on a groundout to end the threat.

Brad Hinkle (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to get the save, while Pena (1) retired the final five batters of the game to secure the save. Tyree Hayes (0-2) allowed four runs on seven hits over two innings and was tagged with the loss. After a rough start, Power starting pitcher Duke Welker settled down nicely. He allowed just one earned run on three hits over four innings.

The Power improved to 1-4 with the win and the Hot Rods fell to 2-4 with the loss. The Power turned in a season best, 11 hits on the night. D'Arnaud, Anderson and Latimore chipped in with multi-hit games and combined for eight out of the 11 hits. The start of the game was delayed 41 minutes due to rain.

The Power will continue the four game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. Bowling Green will start left hander Matt Moore (0-0, 6.00) and the Power will counter with left hander Tyler Cox (0-0). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
