Normal CornBelters News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, will complete Saturday's game on Sunday afternoon after rains forced postponement with the Belters leading the Gateway Grizzlies 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning. The series concludes with the completion of Saturday's game at 4:05 p.m. on Sunday followed by the regularly-scheduled game with a 6:05 p.m. first pitch at GCS Ballpark.
The Grizzlies opened the scoring in the third inning when Jonathan Johnson doubled with one out in the third inning and traded places with Chris McClendon, who doubled off the right center field wall to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 advantage.
Landon Hernandez led off the bottom of the fourth with a drive just inside the left field pole to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.
The CornBelters countered with the second home run of the season from T.J. Gavlik, who placed a shot over the right center field fence with one out in the fifth to cut the Belters deficit to 2-1.
The Belters broke through again in the sixth inning by loading the bases with no outs and tying the game at 2-2 on a sacrifice fly to left by Romulo Ruiz.
Normal pushed through in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead when Gavlik led off with a double and was sacrificed to third. With two outs, Mike Schwartz tapped a slow roller to the left side that the Grizzlies infield couldn't reach and scored Gavlik for the advantage. Heavy rains immediately entered the Metro East area, suspending play.
