Bats Swing Their Way to Victory

Crestwood, IL - Travis Bradshaw earned his first victory by pitching 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs off five hits and striking out four batters. The Miners offense scored eight runs to defeat the Windy City ThunderBolts 8-3 to clinch the series win.

Windy City jumped on Miners starter Travis Bradshaw early as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Southern Illinois answered right back with a RBI fielder's choice by Cannon Lester and Jon Eisen to score Ken Gregory and Carlos Colmenares to tie the game at 2-2.

Southern Illinois took the lead in the top of the fifth inning off ThunderBolts starter Matt Wickswat as Tyler Hall hit a RBI groundout to score Cannon Lester who led off the inning with a double. The Miners led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Miners extended their lead to 8-2 in the top of the sixth inning as they scored three runs off Wickswat and two more off reliever Ray Cotilla. Ken Gregory hit a RBI double to score Carlos Mendez. Carlos Colmenares hit a sacrifice fly to score Gerardo Avila. Catcher Mario Mercedes hit a RBI single to score Ken Gregory and Tyler Hall hit a two RBI double to score Mario Mercedes and Cannon Lester.

Windy City added a late run in the bottom of the ninth inning off Miners reliever Matt Sergey. Michael Carden struck out ThunderBolts center fielder Nate Pittman with the bases loaded to close out the game. The Miners won 8-3 and improved to 14-12 on the season.

The Miners go for the series sweep tomorrow as they send Brian Oliver to the mound. First pitch gets underway at 5:05 pm from Standard Bank Stadium.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
