Lexington Legends News Release
Hickory used a rain-soaked five-run second inning to cruise to a 13-7 victory over the Legends on Wednesday night at Applebee's Park. The game was delayed twice--the first time before it was scheduled to start--as local radar indicated that rain was imminent. Not a single drop fell, and the game began 27 minutes later than planned.
The second delay came with Legends starter Bud Norris in a jam in the top of the second inning. With a 1-0 lead provided by Cesar Quintero's leadoff double and subsequent advance around the bases the inning before, Norris (0-1) allowed the first three batters to reach on back-to-back singles up the middle, followed by his error on Jim Negrych's sacrifice bunt attempt. That's when the downpour began. Umpires Drew Ashcraft and Jason Kaminsky tried to play through it, but after Norris walked Kent Sakamoto to bring a run home, they decided to pull the teams off the field. The game was delayed for another hour and four minutes as a storm cloud settled in above Applebee's Park.
When the teams returned to action, Corey Bass took the hill for the Legends with the bases loaded. He allowed all of those runners to score on singles by Eddie Prasch and Kristopher Watts, and then Prasch came home on Alex Presley's fielder's choice to make the score 5-1.
Both teams piled on several runs during the rest of the game, but Hickory never relinquished the lead. Quintero went 2-for-4 for the home team, including a stand-up triple in the third to drive Tim Torres home from first. He scored one of his three runs when Greg Buchanan drove him home with a line drive sacrifice fly to right field.
Hickory presented a relentless offensive attack in the victory. The 'Dads racked up sixteen hits against Lexington pitching. Four of those hits came off the bat of Sakomoto, who went 4-for-4, driving in four runs and scoring three. He hit his second home run of the year in the fifth against Bass.
Kyle DeYoung was the lone bright spot from the mound for Lexington, pitching two perfect innings of relief, striking out two, and making a pair of nice fielding plays when two separate Crawdad hitters attempted to bunt their way on base against him.
Basilio Alvarez (1-0) received the win for his relief efforts for the visiting side.
The two teams will return to the field for a 7:05 p.m. start tomorrow evening. Eric Krebs (0-0, 1.80) will draw Doug Arguello (0-1, 6.48) on a Thirsty Thursday. A Corn Hole Express corn hole tournament will precede the game.
