July 5, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Columbia Fireflies News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - The Fireflies game vs the Charleston RiverDogs finished early Wednesday night at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park. The RiverDogs mustered a 3-2 win as the game was suspended and ultimately ended in the top of the seventh with one out and Dionmy Salon on first base.
The difference came in the bottom of the sixth. After Chase Wallace struck out Christopher Barate he reached on the drop third strike and came around on a Chandler Simpson infield single with two outs to put the RiverDogs in front 3-2.
Austin Charles slammed his second homer in as many days in the top of the sixth, tying the game 2-2. Charles now has four hits in his last eight at-bats. The infielder has homered twice, tripled and doubled to propel the Fireflies lineup.
Charleston got the scoring started in the third inning. Edwin Barragan collected his first Carolina League hit with a lead-off double before coming around on Xavier Isaac's second double of the night. Isaac came around on a Cooper Kinney RBI single to give the RiverDogs a 2-0 lead.
Andres Diaz got the spot start for the Fireflies and he performed admirably. The reliever made his first appearance in Columbia and just his second start since 2019. Diaz went 3.2 innings, allowing a pair of runs before he handed the ball to Chase Wallace and the Fireflies bullpen.
Columbia continues their series with the Charleston RiverDogs tomorrow night at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park at 7:05 pm. Columbia has yet to name their starter, but the RiverDogs will start RHP Marcus Johnson (1-4, 3.95 ERA).
The Fireflies return home after the All-Star Break, for a three-game series vs the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers July 14-16. The Fireflies have jammed that weekend filled with amazing promotions for our first-ever Dinosaur weekend. Ed's Dinosaurs will bring animatronic, life-sized dinosaurs to Segra Park, we'll have a dinosaur bobblehead giveaway Friday and on Saturday we'll set off a wonderful fireworks show. Tickets are available at FirefliesTickets.com.
