Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans snapped their three-game losing streak with a 9-3 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets on Wednesday night. With the win, the Pelicans stand at 44-32 and 5-6 in the second half. Augusta dropped to 37-39 and 6-5 in the second half.

In one of the best bullpen outings of the season, reliever Jose Romero (1-0) grabbed his first win with 2 2/3 shutout innings with just one walk and six strikeouts against nine batters faced. Starter Drew Gray tossed three scoreless innings with one hit and three walks allowed with four strikeouts.

It was an efficient night for the Birds' lineup as eight hits turned into nine runs. Cristian Hernandez (2-5, 2 RBI) hit a pair of RBI singles with Pedro Ramirez (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI) bringing home two on a double. Miguel Pabon (1-4, 2 RBI) also drove home two in the victory.

Augusta starter Jhancarlos Lara (2-5) took the loss with three runs, all earned coming across the plate in his four innings. The bullpen went on to allow six more runs with five being earned as the Pelicans also drew seven walks.

It was a quiet night for the GreenJackets lineup as their first run didn't come until the eighth inning on a home run by Ambioris Tavarez (2-5, HR, RBI). Tyler Collins (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI) brought home two on a double in the ninth. Five of Augusta's six hits came in the final two innings.

The Pelicans jumped on it from the start with an early run in the first. After Reivaj Garcia singled and stole second, Hernandez grounded an RBI single to right as the Birds scored just two batters into the game.

Ramirez cashed in for the Pelicans in the top of the fourth with a two-run double to right field that scored runners from second and third to extend the lead to 3-0.

Myrtle Beach piled it on with three runs in the sixth and seventh inning. With one out and runners on second and third, Pabon hit a bouncing ball to short that went by Ambioris Tavarez for an error as one run came home. Garcia followed with a sacrifice fly to left to bring home the second run, and Hernandez hit his second RBI single to right as the Birds pushed it to a 6-0 lead.

Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Pelicans in the top of the seventh. Rafael Morel drew another walk to bring home a run. With Ramirez at the plate, Chad Bryant threw a wild pitch to bring home Juan Mora. With runners at second and third and one out, Pabon smacked an RBI single to left to bring the lead to nine.

With just their second hit of the night, Tavarez hit a solo home run to left to break the shutout in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 9-1 ballgame.

The GreenJackets scored their final two runs in the last inning. With two on and two outs, Collins lined a double to left to score both and cut the lead down to six.

Myrtle Beach and Augusta meet for game three of the series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.
